EnergyAustralia has interpreted modelling of the Tallawarra B plume as safe for aviation. We aviators have interpreted that same modelling as showing the plume to be twice as vigorous as Australia’s Aviation Safety Authority has set as the safe limit for aviation for the Tallawarra B plume.

EnergyAustralia - Tallawarra B

EnergyAustralia is building Tallawarra B under a conditional approval from NSW Department of Planning with the condition that the plume is safe for aviation.

The Tallawarra B plume is an invisible, very vigorous, high energy plume. It will exit the stack at modelled temperatures of 633.7℃, average speed of 227 km/hr with modelled jet gusts in excess of 700 km/hr.

Tallawarra B requires an experimental ‘top hat’ called a ‘plume dispersion device’ (PDD) fitted to the top of the stack to force the plume sideways before it turns vertically upwards, in an attempt to make it safe for aviation.

EnergyAustralia has interpreted peer reviewed modelling of the use of this experimental device as safe for aviation. We aviators interpret that same peer reviewed modelling as showing the Tallawarra B plume will be up to twice as vigorous as CASA set as the safe limit for the Tallawarra B plume.

There are two ways to find out if this plume is safe for aviation. The current approach will wait until there is a fatal aviation accident over Haywards Bay.

Our preferred way is to third party peer review measurements of the actual plume as part of commissioning of Tallawarra B to prove whether it is safe for aviation or not.

Safe solution for Tallawarra B plume

Parliament requires CASA, Australia’s Aviation Safety Authority, to commission an independent third party peer review of measurement of the actual plume during commissioning.

Safe aviation for Shellharbour Airport

CASA determines if the plume is safe for aviation or not, and advises NSW Department of Planning accordingly. If deemed not safe for aviation, Tallawarra B is not granted operational approval in its current configuration. If deemed safe, the local aviation community implements local mitigating strategies.
